Awarded Proposal
I propose to paint a mural divided into four 4'x4' abstract sections, each distinct in its color harmony, but connected at the edges with a continuous flow of brushstrokes. The overall effect will be a rich tapestry of vibrant colors, with four sections that play off each other while maintaining a unique feeling for each. Each section will have a different guiding principle behind the mark making, whether it’s a focus on the rich experience of intuitive play, or the methodical attention to subtlety in scientific research. The process will be spontaneous and organic, and will create a fully original work. Special attention will be placed on how color weaves itself through the entire piece in a pleasing way for the viewer's eye. The free-flow expression of paint will nicely contrast the orderly and analytic nature of the library, encouraging students in their studies and providing an energy boost for those who walk by. The piece will also reflect the pure joy of the ideas within the books’ pages, an explosion of appreciation for the connection we feel with great literature, and the value of our society’s repository of information found in our libraries.

Materials specifications:
- High chroma, rich pigmentation, vibrant acrylic paint: particular focus on connection between CMY and RGB hues, investigating translation of digital color theory to physical pigments
- Paints need to have good lightfastness for outdoor display
- Bright white primer to best show off the vibrant colors on wooden panels
- Small-bristle brushes for smooth application of paint in expressive brushstrokes, replicating free style of digital works
- Both Matte and Gloss medium to extend pigments
